With its commanding views of Sedona, Saddlerock Ranch was once the main homestead for a 6,000 acre ranch that covered most of what is today West Sedona. Perched on a hillside, the property is now slimmed down to three acres that border hundreds of acres of National Forest. In the late 1940's, the country home was remodeled into a guest ranch by Ed Ellinger. Guests would ride horseback down to the banks of Oak Creek, a mere 3 miles away, to fish and swim. According to local historians, many western stars of the day visited and stayed at the estate. These included John Wayne, Arlene Dahl, William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) and Jimmy Stewart. The house is featured in an establishing shot in the John Wayne film The Angel and the Badman. |
